“So true, Rachel, we can’t love without knowing. I guess I’ve just learned that pretending is harder than opening up and asking for help. As with everything, I had to learn that the hard way, too. I don’t want to pry, but if you ever want to share more, maybe some specifics of your journey, I’d be happy to hear it. Totally up to you, and no pressure.”

I flash a grin at her just before Kate says, “Once…” She pauses dramatically. “I had a splinter in my finger.”

I laugh, the sound ringing through the cool darkness of the hall. It felt so good to laugh, to know I’m no longer alone with my pain. That hurdle over, it felt okay to just relax and *be*. “Yes!” I said, still laughing. It was just too perfect. “Thank you. Some people get all awkward around me when they find out I’m sick. I much prefer joking.” I grin at Kate. “Don’t worry about saying anything. Just listening is huge. Thanks.”

I pause, searching her face for clues. Was she ready to share her story? No, I won’t ask her right now. Maybe if a few others share, that will make it easier. Being second isn’t much easier than being first. I just happen to have lots of experience with awkward situations.

@elizabeth – doesn’t matter how good it sounds (thankfully, lol) 😉 Just pull up a chair and join us! The candles don’t give off a lot of warmth, but the community does!
