Oh, really! That’s cool. Did most of the SE staff agree with the video’s assessment?
I find your conclusion interesting – what makes you hesitate to call Rey a Mary Sue? Now that you mentioned it, I do recall Luke’s rather quick ability to wield the lightsaber, but perhaps Luke’s development made more sense because we were actually shown some lessons he received from Yoda vs. Rey in TLJ, in which not much teaching is given but she is still so powerful?
[By the way, I think I forgot to mention before that I thought your blog article about the themes in TLJ to be very insightful and the only one I’ve found to be so. I intended to comment on it but found out that your site does not give the option to do so.]
Ah – that makes sense. That would be very interesting for Rey, and probably could redeem her ability to perform well as a SW character. I didn’t think of that: I kind of gave up on Rey’s “development” altogether because there were no indication that led me to believe so and I was preoccupied with wanting Ren to join her and save the Rebels in the final act after the part where they were both fighting against the Guards. I thought the end was really anti-climatic when they ruined this possibility/expectation (or perhaps Johnson was just sticking by his idea of destroying fan’s expectations in general – for good or ill). Do you think Johnson destroyed so many expectations before the ending because he wanted that to contribute to tLJ’s “destroy the past” emphasis? Or perhaps so that fans will have difficulty predicting where the story is going?
Yes. I think we can all agree that, thematically, tLJ is much more powerful than, say, the Transformers. 😛
