Pretty much what Germaine was discribeing, the unexpected endings. Pixar has a lot of these, you go into the movie thinking you know how this is going to end yet they manage to turn this on its head while still making it a happy ending. Think of Toy Story 3, none of the toys go with thier beloved Andy to collage, instead they find a new home. Or Up where Elle actually dies and her husband never has a chance to take her to the Falls, but instead he sort of adopts the little boy. These are the happy endings you don’t see coming, yet they are still realistic and satisfying.

So maybe the question is how not to make it a unrealistic story book ending, but how to make it clear the main character is going to be okay.
