The world continued to tremble. Stones began to fall from the ceiling, except over the pool. The floor rocked, as if on a stormy sea. “Let’s move!” Nithel’s eyes widened, and his heart banged against his chest. It’s just another test. He grabbed Leana’s wrist, scooped up the boy who’d just appeared under one arm and dragged her toward the pool. He turned toward Alessio, with one foot on the edge of the rocking abyss. “Let’s go!” He jerked his chin, and risked a glance at everyone else, before looking back at his friend. Come, Alessio. Please. He didn’t release the boy under his other arm, though he struggled.

“Papa!” Leana shouted, staring at her father like he was a mad stranger. But uncertain what to do. She jerked nearer to him as another stone fell, the size of a head.

Ohel moved forward. I wouldn’t have guessed you were a leader… Honestly, ready to dive in after Nithel or someone else took the plunge. The ground rocked so hard, he almost fell over, and stone rolled toward him. Nevermind. He leapt for the pool.
