I almost missed you asking about brainstorming! I’ve very similar to Libby. Sometimes I’ll just get an idea (like how delicate roses are or how beautiful rainy days can be) and a line or two, and it just snowballs from there.
The chai tea poem is adorable! I love it (and chai tea. I’m a self-admitted tea addict).
I love A.A. Milne! Believe it or not, I actually never read any Winnie the Pooh until I was much older (probably 12 or 13). The art and writing are so sweet though. I couldn’t help but fall in love. Shel Silverstein is adorable as well, and I was never introduced to his poems until a few months ago.
Resources… I once got a second-hand poetry book that I can’t remember the name of… The greatest thing I learned from it was to think outside the box. Writing free prose, writing in “letter form”, etc.
Watching and emulating a wide variety of different poets and outlines is another way I improved. One of my favorite poems I wrote so far was inspired after reading Story Embers’ Cindy Green’s poem, “Letter to a Wildflower Friend” and trying to emulate the style with my own idea.
