One by one, shadows slip out of various corners and steal up to the table in silence. What will this hall sound like once we’re all here, and comfortable enough to laugh?

Though somehow it would be a sacrilege to laugh just yet. I lean forward, clasping chilled hands on the table.

A girl slips into Grace’s chair— must be Grace?— and tucks a strand of hair behind one ear, eyes flickering half veiled to the few filled places round the table.

She’s… young. Though I guess we all are. I lean forward… try my voice for the first time. “Hello?” It squeaks too much. I swallow and summon what I hope is a welcoming grin. “Long… trip?”
