Kieron reached the stairs and began retreating up them. They weren’t very wide. Which meant the soldiers could only engage him two at a time. Unless they managed to get behind him. Which would be bad. Very bad. But he wasn’t going to let that happen. He stopped about three quarters of the way up the stairs and began fighting in earnest again.

He toppled the guards off the sides of the stairs. The fall wasn’t far enough to kill them, but it did knock them out or otherwise put them out of commission. Several minutes later he had dealt with all the soldiers who’d been after him. Which was good. He was getting tired. He was mortal after all.

He descended the stairs and looked around. He didn’t see Anna, she must still be invisible. He did see the other girl though. She was standing protectively in front of a door. He walked over to her, breathing hard, warily keeping an eye out for more guards. “Are you okay? And who are you? I’m Kieron. And Anna’s around here somewhere…” He glanced around again. Still no sign of Anna. He hoped she hadn’t been hurt.
