“Brendin,” the man said, clasping Virtus’ offered hand in a strong grip. When he relaxed his hold, he scanned the room, as if searching for viable threats. This man was either trained as a bodyguard or soldier, something warrior-like. Or Virtus didn’t realize that normal people did that.

Virtus also did a quick assessment. All of the occupants were male, and most seemed to be young men. Several carried themselves in a way that told of skill with weapons, others seemed fearful. One man, in the center of the room, stood proudly erect. Something about him seemed… off. Like Delernious. Virtus shrugged to himself and mentally decided it was worth checking that out.

He strode over and bowed his head, putting his right hand on his forehead and slowing drawing it away as he looked up in the traditional salute. Cracking a grin, he tried to exude friendliness. “You seem to be in charge, sir. My name is Virtus, son of Fidus. I am a soldier in Lord Delernious’ army.” Not so true anymore. “I was curious if you might tell me where I am?”
