Favourite contemporaries?? Man. The definition of ‘contemporary’ will be loose here, but anyways.

    Blank Mastermind – Rosey Mucklestone

    Mission League – Jill Williamson

In 27 Days – Alison Gervais

    A Thousand Perfect Notes – C. G. Drews (Haven’t read, still recommend)

The Boy Who Steals Houses – C. G. Drews (Haven’t read, still recommend)

    One-Of-My-Favourite-Books-Of-All-Time-That-Needs-To-Be-Published

I know there’s more than that, but I can’t think right now. Hmmm… (All of the above I would give content/trigger warnings for, actually. Just so you know.)

Middle-grade contemporary? It deserves to be able to be free of badly written romance. Among other things. Good plot, good characters and strong themes are often missing. People just fall back on the same stories that ten other people have written, so yeah.

Again, the genre often seems to be cliche, or boring… But it can be done really well. Powerful themes can be written.
