Sorry, I misunderstood my sister.  She thought I was talking about just MG, and not both MG and little kids.  The Penderwicks is an MG story; it just might be sad for younger kids because they talk about their mom who died of cancer.  After discussing it some more, the story Prince Martin Wins His Sword (by indie author Brandon Hale) might be a better fit for what you’re looking for.  Easy for middle-grade readers; and younger kids would love the storyline of virtue, honor, and friendship.  And it has adorable illustrations.  Hope that helps  🙂
