Cade looked away from Kirat. His eyes filled as he gazed around. “I-” he began, then found himself choked by the tears. He had never let his men see him cry before. But this was so hard. He wanted to be strong, to be a good leader, to do what was best for the sparrows. But what was best in this situation? Kirat’s reminders of his need for sleep and food hardly affected him at all. What was all that compared to the sufferings of these desolate people?

But the thought of the sparrows falling apart. . . He couldn’t let them fall apart like that. Kirat was right in that respect.

Cade blinked back the tears again before they escaped and looked Kirat in the eyes. “I don’t care about my own safety Kirat. . . but maybe you’re right. . . I just- how can I just leave you guys?” his voice broke off.
