When I had to write a really emotional scene, I was absolutely terrified. To me, it seemed like there were two pitfalls, two gaping chasms on either side and a tightrope in between to walk. On one side, my writing would be a flat and unemotional piece of cardboard. On the other, it would be too forced, every line overflowing with it, shoving it in…[Read more]

I completed last week’s goal, to finish a story that I’d had hovering around for a while. It ended up a little choppy, definitely not my best work, but it’s finished! Right now I don’t have anything on my plate–I’m waiting for Camp NaNoWriMo in July to start my next project–so no goals this week! Right now, I can just rest.

I failed in last week’s goals. My plan was to finish a short story I’ve been working on on and off, and get it out of the way before my next big project. But I couldn’t seem to get inspired or motivated. I’m almost at the end and I can’t keep going. It’s really frustrating. Weekly goal this time is, again, to finish the story, but I’m not…[Read more]

I finished the second draft of my story, so I went out for pizza with my sister! My goal for this week is to finish a short story I’ve been working on for a while and get it out of the way before I start my next major project.

You seem to have a weird glitch with the BBcode, there.

I have a major emotional scene in my WIP, and I was terrified going into it. If I put too little emotion into it, it would come out flat. Too much, and it would be in-your-face. But when I actually started writing it, it flowed much more easily than I’d expected. I’m still trying to figure out why, but I think there are two factors:
- I felt the…

Welcome to our little corner of insanity! There are other corners of insanity there, there, over there, and thattaway, but you can ignore them.

Working on fight scenes of my own now. Trying to use the same advice I gave Archer. Anybody else on?

I’d like to finish my second draft. I’m very near the end, but the last few days have been so busy and crowded I haven’t been able to write at all! Hopefully I can get back into the groove smoothly.

@r-m-archer I’m on a website where a bunch of amateur writers post their work online. One of those people is the absolute KING of fight scenes (not of grammar, but that’s a topi for another time). Eventually I decided to try to learn from him. This is what I got:
-Know each character’s fighting style. Let’s say you have a world where magic is…[Read more]

My main character comes from a world where conflict can usually be resolved just by talking it out and coming to an agreement, and where enemies often become friends. This makes her try really hard to avoid getting angry, because if she’s too angry, she might do something she’d regret–like kill an enemy who might have otherwise become a friend.…[Read more]

How about books that we can use to learn something about writing? I think The Hobbit would be good to learn about worldbuilding–you get the sense of a deep world with a lot of culture, but all the extra details never get in the way of the story or overwhelm you. You just feel like there’s a lot to explore. There are just enough details to make…[Read more]

I’m on and finally getting around to writing! There’s a small piece I’ve been wanting to work on for a while, and tomorrow I’m starting a large project that will be taking up all my writing time and energy for a month or two, so today I’m hoping to get the small project out of the way. Anybody else on?

@anne-of-lothlorien I would promise to be careful with it, but I don’t have much precedent for that, since I keep leaving mine in the 17th century…

Is anyone here? I’m trying to muster up the motivation to write, and also trying to decide if I want to be writing my current main work or a short story for a contest that closes in a week and I’m still not sure if I’m entering or not.
