A bird fluttered across the path, chirping in alarm, and flitted into a bush along the path.

Megyn jumped at little at the motion, then lowered her head and stumbled on. “Just a bird.” she mumbled.

I have to talk to myself now to stay awake. She grimaced and then sighed. Her brain ached and whirled. It longed to fall asleep . . . to rest.

The path blurred. Jerking awake, she caught at a mossy sampling to catch herself. Pain flared up her leg, searing her nerves as it went.

Tears squeezed out of her eyes as she lifted her face up to the gray sky. Lord, help me . . . somehow . . .

Her eyes focused on a curl of a dark in the sky. Smoke?

Maybe this is the answer . . .  She sighed in relief and weariness. Taking another step, she walked on, keeping her eyes on that smoke.
