The Traditions that Stole Christmas
In our modern day and age, Americans, if not the entire world get wrapped around the lights, presents, trees, and cute inflatable manger scenes. Traditions rule Christmas. Does anyone know anymore the true meaning of Christmas? Before you answer too quickly, think about it. Popular traditions and songs teach that all was silent in Bethlehem as the savior was born. But it’s more than likely that the streets of Bethlehem echoed with a young woman’s screams as she gave birth. So this wasn’t a silent night, especially when an army of angels came to earth in front of shepherds, chanting praises to the newborn commander of Heavens armies. It was probably a cold night, seeing as the stable couldn’t really have a fire, because animals were in it as well, along with their highly flammable food. Winds may have been harsh. We don’t know for certain. Something we do know is that the birth of our savior was not a cute scene, there were no lights, tinsel, garland, and gifts wrapped with bow ties. It was a painful night and the climax of a very long and tiring journey for Mary and Joseph and contrary to popular opinion there was no mention of a donkey in the scripture. This for Mary this was a awfully hard trip of over 100 miles walking while pregnant. So don’t get so enamored with the glitter and gold of modern Christmas and the cute scenes. Because after his birth, Christ led a hard life and died a brutal death. He became like us so we might become like him. But it’s because of the hardship he went through that we are able to enjoy giving and getting gifts. So as you get and give gifts, don’t forget the true meaning of Christmas, that of a man of sorrows being born in a dirty, smelly, hay barn, beginning a life of hardship, climaxing with his death on the cross. All for me. All for you. Don’t hesitate to accept his great gift he offers to you. The gift of his love.
