*explosive sigh of relief while collapsing* Well, it was a small and hard-won battle with all the Thanksgiving craziness going on, guys, but I finally got to 33,000 words!! Hopefully will make it to 50,000 by month’s end!!

Favorite Snippet: Drent struggled to hold Rona down. He looked at Vorok, his eyebrow cocked in uncertainty. “I wasn’t aware your experiment would endanger the lives of your sister and her dog, my lord,” he said in a low voice.

Vorok shook his head dismissively. “I will not have them interfering with my plans,” he growled. He looked back at the spot where the spear had landed in the forest, presumably where he’d shot Béju. He sighed. “If I didn’t kill your dog, Rona, he’s certainly wounded. A pity; I liked him. But if you hadn’t snooped where you didn’t belong, none of this would have happened.”

Rona glowered at him through her tears. She could see the change in her brother again—the one that had occurred when he’d threatened her earlier with the phoenix talon.

Phoenix. These changes occurred whenever he had contact with a phoenix.

And now the phoenix was inside him. Its evil was taking over, causing him to make decisions that ultimately hurt everyone around him.

Rona glanced at the last place she’d seen her beloved dog. The brush didn’t stir. Béju Instecörr was struck down. Rona didn’t know if he was injured or dead.

“My lord.” Drent’s voice suddenly sounded strained. “Now that Rona knows of what we have done, what do we do?”

Rona glanced sharply at her brother with wide eyes. Surely he wouldn’t kill her as well?

Vorok stroked his goatee contemplatively, frowning back at her. He thought for several moments. “I suppose she has forced us to the extreme, Drent,” he finally said. “We’ll have to flee the Territory. And we shall have to take her with us.”
