Caedon’s name means “white mountain” in Ali’Narae. 😀

“What does your name mean, Vladlena?”

The pause between Caedon’s question and Vladlena’s answer was excruciating.

“A heart of fiery spirit,” she said at last.

Caedon stored this information in the back of his mind. “It suits you. What country are you from?”

“Russia. Outskirts of St. Petersburg, to be exact.”

Caedon’s nose wrinkled. He’d never heard of that place.

“Where are you from?” Vladlena asked.

“Solina. Have you heard of it?”

Vladlena shook her head. “Is it a large country? A monarchy, perhaps?”

Caedon couldn’t help a smile. “Solina isn’t a country. It’s a city. The capital city of Reimira, to be exact.” He liked that phrase of Vladlena’s, mostly because he did like things to be exact. “It used to be a monarchy, but now the Reimirian Council makes most of the decisions. My—” He stopped himself and fixed his gaze on his plate. He always got a funny feeling in his stomach when talking to strangers about his parents. If he told Vladlena, she might act differently. Besides, he didn’t exactly trust her.

Caedon looked up just in time to see Mr. Lucas—or rather, not see him. The man’s head was bowed, as if in slumber, and his body had turned almost transparent, like a ghost. “Mr. McAsgain!” he cried, panic and horror replacing his earlier contentment. “Vladlena, he’s disappearing! Mr. McAsgain!”

And then he was gone. Caedon didn’t realize he was crying until a tear dripped off his chin. He swiped at his face and looked around. Please, let no one else be gone, he prayed desperately. But Runawin, too, was missing. He felt the loss of her and Mr. Lucas very deeply. What if Vladlena and Theseus disappeared, as well? Caedon would be alone again—lost in a dark castle populated by ghosts and whatever other monsters might lurk in the shadowy corridors.

Caedon took a shaky breath. He just wanted to go home.
