Hey, Parimis! In my current WIP, there is a character who receives word that her best friend has been executed for treason. The way I’m writing the story, there is no reason for her to believe that he could have been saved. (But, spoiler, he is. Sort of. It’s rather complicated, but it has to do with his father’s sly plots and such.) I want the reader to believe that, too, that way it’s even better when it turns out he lives.
My question is, how should she react that would make it believable? Initially, I had her cry and mourn him, but now I think it would be better if she refused to believe that he could have been killed. Should she cling stubbornly to the hope that he escaped, or just accept that he died?
This also has a lot to do with her character. She’s something like an ENFP, and is quite stubborn and independent, which is why I’m beginning to think I should change the way she reacts.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. 🙂
