Along the lines of the hero giving himself away piece by piece, I have an idea, but it’s kind of fantasy-ish. Not sure if we’re going for that genre? Anyway, what if the MC has the power to heal others, but each time he does he gives away part of his own life force? So as his comrades are repeatedly injured in battles, he keeps healing them and getting sicker and sicker until he slowly dies.

I’m using masculine pronouns, but it could be a female, too.
