@hope-mcclellan Well, that was a slow one for me. XD 330 words.

Didn’t write it during this war, but favorite lines (okay paragraphs) from today:

About an hour later, it was done. The woman still slept soundly, her incision packed and dressed. As I opened the door to dump a pot of water, a figure sitting back against the wall startled me.

I didn’t realize he was still here, I thought, giving the woman’s nephew a half smile. He glanced up as I began pouring the water out on the ground. Holding up a hand as I turned back, he quickly bent over and started writing in the dust on the path.

Is she all right?

My eyebrows shot up, and I glanced at him curiously. I had seen a deaf man in my hometown who lived with his parents. He couldn’t speak or write; he simply took care of his parents’ animals and worked in their yard with blank eyes.

But this boy was different. His eyes were bright, active. And filled with something more, too. It was a sort of glint that managed to throw a shadow over his gaze at the same time that it lit it up.

It was sadness, I knew, pure and simple. Loneliness and grief blended into one sheer, subdued layer over his spirit.
