During the last few days of NaNoWriMo I saw people here spontaneously having word wars. I knew that SE holds formal word wars between guilds, adding up the word count for the entire week. However, I am not in a guild, and I liked the idea of two people battling it out for 15-30 minutes to see who could write more. Immediately I knew I wanted to have a go. But like I said, I discovered this during the last few days of NaNo.

Plus, I never stood a chance.

Reading through the forum, people were writing 200+ words in a 15 minute span. My daily word goal is 200. I’ll admit it. I’m a slow writer. I’m an INFJ, so I think things through carefully before putting it down on the page. I know a lot of INFPs are this way too. We just write slow.

So this is for anyone who would like to word war with other slow writers! I am home sick, so I personally will be here all day for anyone who wants to word war. 🙂

This topic may or may not take off, but I thought it was worth a shot. 🙂

@hope-mcclellan Ooh, I love this! I really enjoyed word warring with people during NaNo and was missing it after it ended. I’d like to word war with you at some point! See, my sister finished reading my WIP at 1:30 AM last night and now I kind of have to finish it. 😅

Yay! Wow, you have one dedicated sister. That actually makes me really happy because my sister has become my biggest cheerleader for writing. Is your sister older or younger than you?

Like I said, I’m here all day, so let me when and how long you would like to war for!

@hope-mcclellan She’s about four years older than me. We have a funny history: we were basically best friends at birth, then became mortal enemies when we got older, and then one day just looked at each other and were like, ‘this is stupid’ and just became friends again after that XD. She’s the one I spew my writing stuff to and she says she hopes it stays that way! 😀 I love sending her bits of my stories while she’s at college and then forcing her to read the story when she comes home. Only problem is, she has a limited attention span (ADHD), so she sometimes just does a chapter or two at a time. That was the plan last night, but then I abruptly ended the chapter on a cliffhanger, and it all went downhill from there XP.

*looks back at what she just wrote* That was longer than I intended it to be.

Anyway, I’d love to do a word war! Although Mom had to go and remind me that I’m supposed to get some physics done today. . . maybe I’ll work on that until 1:20 and war for 15 minutes then?

Haha that’s awesome! I love it. 😛 Having a family that supports your writing is amazing. Siblings really can be your best friends if you let them.

1:20 for 15 minutes sounds awesome! I shall prepare my weapon….um, I mean pen.

Alright, I just finished. I got started a little late, but after fifteen minutes, I got 380. Honestly, I am incredibly surprised. I almost never write that fast.

    @naiya-dyani

Way to go!! 😀 *showers you with confetti* Thank you for honoring me with my first word war!

If you don’t mind me asking… what is your WIP about?

@hope-mcclellan Heh heh. . . *rubs hands* (let’s see if I can manage to not sound like a blithering idiot 😛 )

The short version is, it’s a speculative fiction (I believe that means imaginary world but not fantasy???) story about a group of teenagers in a mountain village that end up facing danger surrounding one of their friends and have to struggle to keep both him and themselves safe while dealing with issues from their pasts. I mean, I guess that sounds a little boring just on its own, but if you want I can be a little more detailed, tell you about characters, etc. 😛 What’s yours about?

Haha I think everyone struggles with summarizing their story. *raises hand*

I have to say I am interested! Sounds neat so far, but I would love some more detail and information about characters!

I am working on a Christian fantasy novel, for which I do not have a name yet. The premise is that there is only one copy of the Bible, and for decades it has been spread throughout the entire country in sections and pages. Four adolescents have been chosen to track down every last page so that Yehday (the Bible) can be copied and shared. The kids go through adventure after adventure gathering pages and travelling over the country. During their travels, each of the kids discovers the truth about Yehovah (God) and His Son Jesus, and come to have personal relationships with Him.

That’s the awkward gist of it. XD

@hope-mcclellan Ooh, I like the original concept! Must hear more about the characters 😀 .

Okay. . . so my MC, Grace Hammond, is about 16 or so when her father dies. She and her mother move to Cresba (a northern mountainous region that is a dependency of her home country, Aimoni), where her Uncle Anthan lives, as a result. She makes friends with her cousin and his two friends, as well as a deaf boy who moves to Layra (the village) a little later in the story. Might as well just give a brief profile of each (including random details) 😛 :

Grace: INTJ, very logical but cares about people in her unique way, loyal, doesn’t like cats, blonde hair and kind of sharp green eyes

Dari: Grace’s cousin, likes to get into dumb arguments with his friend Tai, avoids real conflict and tries to get along with everyone (which results in problems when he does little to defend his friend Kiet when he gets bullied), hair and eyes similar to Grace’s (eyes are a little less sharp though)

Tai: My jokester/prankster boi, likes to mess with his friends but really does care about them, more to him than you see on the surface though (but I can’t tell you any of that because spoilers if you ever read it 😛 ), loves his pony-sized dog, reddish-blond hair and amber/brown eyes

Kiet: My precious INFP boi! (I love him, in case you couldn’t tell 😉 ), born in a Sirakani tribe in Birkata (Birkata is the country north of Cresba where two tribes, the Jirkana and Sirakani, live; the Jirkana are peaceful and get along with just about everyone and cause trouble for no one, while the Sirakani are a pretty vicious tribe–raiding and all that), works with medicines (though he doesn’t do well with the blood side of medicine; likes to stick more to the herbs side of things), loves him his cats, is generally an absolute sweetie all around–unless you do something to one of his friends (at which time you may find yourself in a coma for a good while), has a lot of sad backstory though 🙁 . Black hair, green eyes–looks a bit like real-world Japanese, just with green eyes 😛 . An awesome person made a picture of him on the character art page 😀 .

Nyel: Kiet’s twin brother, very different person, pretty moody and taciturn because reasons, (need to develop him further), naturally looks like Kiet.

Kedori: Comes in later in the story, deaf, very smart (although his aunt, whom he lives with now that his parents are dead, doesn’t want him to go to school), becomes good friends with Grace, Dari, Tai, and Kiet, brown hair and blue eyes.

Gerik: He’s. . . a gem. . . XD. Is a bit arrogant, bullies Kiet because he hates Sirakani, also bullies Kedori because he’s kind of a jerk all around and he finds it easy to pick on someone who’s deaf (ya know, until Kiet’s protective side comes out 😛 ), fairly heavy-built with blond hair and blue eyes

Wow, that. . . was a lot. XD I kind of love my children. You know, except for Gerik. Does he have backstory that influences his actions? Yes. Does that justify anything? Of course not 😉 .

Anyway, I’ve already taken long enough getting back to you 😛 . What are your characters like?

OH MY GOODNESS I LOVE THEM ALL!!! (except Gerik) I love your concept, and Kiet is probably my favorite from your description. I would LOVE to see the picture of him! What thread is he in? I love that you have Kedori being deaf, as well! I took American Sign Language for four years, so the Deaf community will always hold a special place in my heart. Someday I hope to find a way to accurately represent sign language in writing. I would be interested to know how you are doing it; do you just italicize what he says?

Oh boy, time for my characters. I have four main characters, plus a handful of side characters they meet throughout their travels that I won’t include here.

Asmund: INFJ. Very quiet and shy. He has borderline social anxiety, but he also has a lot of leadership potential that he just doesn’t see yet. He’s really sweet and caring once you get to know him. A strong rule follower, and likes having a plan at all times. Loves archery and astronomy. Oh yeah, he’s a centaur. He has a chestnut horse body, sky blue eyes, and black, wavy, shoulder-length hair. He’s the only child of the village leader.

Firn: ESTP. She is also a centaur, with a orange and white pinto body that matches her fiery head of curls, hazel eyes. Loves action, doesn’t really care for plans, very athletic, can handle just about any kind of weapon, risk-taker, loves having fun, always in the middle of the action, collects random objects and stores them all in her satchel. From the same village as Asmund. Her father is chief of security and training instructor.

Hydra: ENFP. Bubbly and smart all at once, totally a people person, can get along with just about anyone, left handed, loves studying the plants and animals of the country, so she’s filled with lots of random facts and knowledge. She’s both logical and whimsical, definitely the social butterfly. She’s a naiad (a water nymph), but the naiads of my world are made 100% out of water, like in the Narnia movies. Hydra has large, sparkling eyes, a short, broad nose, a gap between her front teeth, and dimples. She also has 10 sisters, four younger and six older.

Cillian: (don’t ask about his MBTI because i’m not quite sure, although he is an ambivert) Cillian is my special one. He is the only person of his kind, he has no species like him. No one knows where he came from or what he is. If you or me were to look at him, we might say he is a human like us, although we may be wrong. But in my world there are absolutely no humans. Cillian has extremely pale skin, ice blue eyes, and hair so black it looks almost blue, and he has ice powers, too. He has been sobered and hardened by a life time of ridicule and ostracism. Most of the time he comes across as cool-tempered, always with this air of pride. But he does have a temper that will flare up without warning. Inwardly, Cillian is empty and restless. That’s why for three years he traveled over the whole country, searching for something to fill the void. He’s living without a purpose.

That’s really only scratching the surface of my characters, but I think that will have to be enough for now.

I FINALLY FOUND KIET!!! I went through at least three different topics and 21 different pages before I finally found him, but I FOUND HIM!! 😀 *insert boisterous fanfare*

I love your characters and would totally love to read your story.

Also, let me know if you would be interested in another word war. 😉

@hope-mcclellan AHHH. . . if you ever need a beta reader. . . I’m always looking for distractions from my schoolwork, especially ones as fascinating as this one! 😀 I’d love to see more of Asmund. I’ll bet he and Firn have an interesting character dynamic XD. And. . . agh, they just all sound so interesting! Hydra’s already got me smiling, because my sister is an ENFP, too. And Cillian. . . he intrigues me. . .

You’re going to have such a fun story when you’re done! 😀

And heh, Kiet’s kind of my favorite character, too. XD Don’t tell Grace. It took me forever to properly develop her because he distracted me so much. But hey, she likes him too, so I can’t imagine she’d mind TOO much.

Kedori has been fun to write! I’m actually learning ASL myself (I’m almost done with ASL 2) using Lifeprint.com. How did you learn it?

One of my issues/things to play with in my story is that in his world, there’s not exactly a Deaf community like you can find here. There’s more of a stigma around being deaf. His biggest support was his mother, who came up with a sign language so they could communicate easily and taught him a lot of school stuff since he didn’t go to school in his hometown (whether that’s because the teacher didn’t want to deal with a deaf kid in the classroom or for some other reason I haven’t thought through yet). It hit him pretty hard when both she and his father died. After moving to Layra to live with his aunt, he was pretty dedicated to learning, not just because he enjoyed it (although he did), but also because it helps him feel close to his mother.

But anyway, to answer your question! Since he’s the only one besides his mother that really knows his sign language, he mostly just writes to other people on a slate, and that’s fairly easy to just communicate with italics. His friends do try to learn some sign, but they can only communicate so easily like that to start, and he’s kind of used to having to write things down. However, when he gets upset, he sometimes just starts signing. And sometimes when he does that, you can tell the basics of what he’s saying even if you don’t know much sign!

(I do wish I could think of a way to communicate the essence of sign in writing, though! Because just putting down the complete English translation doesn’t capture the flavor of it, but describing every sign step by step is pretty overboard. *sigh* )

And last but not least, I love the Kiet picture and love sharing it with anyone who will look! XD
