Hey, Parimis! I’m currently editing Ashen Blaze...again. There’s a reason I call myself an obsessive editor. Anyway, I have a good reason for this edit—a little something called backstory.

Through the years, my beta-readers have often told me that my book begins very suddenly. Readers get punched in the face with the action, so to speak. I always brushed off that concern, thinking that the best way to get to know a character was by thrusting them into a perilous situation. I have come to realize how wrong I was.

Something about the beginning of my book has always bugged me. I could never get it right no matter how much I edited. At one point, I turned back time so that my book began a few hours earlier. That seemed to be a step in the right direction. I’m taking it farther than that, though, by writing some backstory to introduce my characters long before the action starts.

Those of you who have read my book, I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Was there anything you were confused about while reading the first few chapters? Do you think I’m heading in the right direction?
