I’d say erring on the side of simple would probably be better at this point, with our deadline looming up. So maybe no magic?

Maybe, to combine Elisha’s and Anne’s ideas, we could have a world that is suffering from famine, and the only way to save the starving people is to eat some animal that Culture A is protecting. Then Culture B could be clashing with Culture A because they don’t share the same views and they want to save their people. Maybe the cultures could have been already at war in the first place, to add more conflict. We could make up the animal and its importance to the culture to make the story more unique (and possibly add some symbolism there?). What do you guys think?
