@Daeus-lamb *nods* It’s true writers build their ‘circle’ with people they naturally click with. Trying to build that tight of a community on purpose doesn’t manage itself very well.
That said, I think the guilds are still a fantastic idea. Maybe instead of focusing them primarily on building a tight community they could be focused around competition, opinions, discussions— iron sharpening iron and all that. I’m not saying the community can’t be tight or friendly or random or any of that, just that putting so much focus upfront on being a ‘writing family’ makes it kinda top-heavy. People feel awkward investing emotional effort to connect deeply with people just because they’re supposed to— especially young adults who have to prioritize time. 😉
I think an open floor for questions would be a really good idea. I don’t even think it would have to be something the guildmasters put a lot of effort into answering, though of course we wouldn’t mind hearing from all the writing geniuses around here. 😉 Maybe we could compile the list of questions, pet peeves, or interesting topics and then pick one or two and go through them ourselves, as a guild. ‘Writing Discussion Thursday’ or something. Once a month or so. Maybe that could be monthly and the guild wars once every two months. The mad scramble to get a guild-war story written every month wouldn’t be quite so mad if we had two months between them, to breathe and discuss writing together and build ourselves up more as a team. As they are, they’re tremendous fun, but also a little exhausting.
Also, Saxon Scribes— it probably wouldn’t hurt if we ventured sometimes into the great outer world of the rest of the forum as well. There’s a lot of really cool discussions and questions and things out there. We could engage the rest of the forum and bring any particularly interesting or controversial topics back here for the deeper input of our smaller group. This is a good thing we’ve got going here. Like all teams, sometimes it needs a good shaking up, but it’s worth the effort. 😉
