Ugh, yeah, bad romance is an issue. I didn’t read a huge amount of middle-grade contemporary (most of it was just a little more historical), but they did all start to feel the same pretty quickly. And the glaring absence of deep themes definitely bothered me. To be honest, that’s what made me prejudiced against writing middle-grade. But then I realized that’s all the more reason to write it. xD

One of the ones that I do like (and is actually the only one I still own xD) is Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper. It’s good enough that I’ve read it several times. Even my mom, who rarely ever reads fiction, couldn’t put it down.
