Great points! Especially about pointing out the good things. When people tell us what we’ve done well, we can learn how to bring out our strong points and eventually make our writing more unique. Plus, it gives us confidence to reach for something higher. When my friend flailed over my worldbuilding, I realized how much further I could go with it, and that took my story to a much deeper level. And I think quite often we writers imagine that we’re terrible at everything until someone tells us we’re not. 😛 (Although the opposite can be true as well.)
@j-a-penrose Are there any specific ways you can learn to “read the writer,” or does it only come by spending a long time getting to know someone and reading a ton of their writing? Just wondered if there is a way to focus on learning that with friends to maybe reach that point sooner.
Also, any suggestions for beta reading for a graphic novelist? My best friend is writing a graphic novel, and I realize more every day how different it is. xD
