I’d tend to agree with you @daeus-lamb

I’ve gotten a few poems published through magazines or literary journals and thought to myself afterwards, “I wonder if anyone actually reads these besides those who contribute to them.” And the thought of taking a book of poems to a publisher without any big awards to my name sounds like a waste of time to me. I see myself either getting rejected or my book losing its identity and me losing money on it, not to mention that probably no one will read it. There are chapbook competitions I guess. I think novels or nonfiction would have more options though.

What do you mean by “having your own platform”? Like self publishing and using your own website and social media for marketing?
