All right… @wordsmith and @erica-wordsmith – As the leaders of the two opposing forces who have both written down their say on the subject of math, I request that you lay down your arms. You can both appreciate the other’s opinion even if you don’t agree. You can both appreciate math is useful even if not to what degree. (And I also recognize that this debate likely isn’t being mean, it’s just taking over a thread meant for other topics…)
One final thing on math which is my opinion that I hope can bring reconciliation between the two sides.
I hate math. I love math. That is our relationship.
The actual subject of math is very difficult for me to comprehend. I’ve never gotten an A in any math class, doing it generally does not make me feel happy or educated or nice at all, it just makes me frustrated at the complicated-ness of what seems to be useless stuff. I would much rather be writing than doing math.
BUT…
I recognize the extreme importance math has in our society, in our lives, in everything. You know how we love writing to each other on here, talking about everything? Well, that’s only possible because someone sat down, worked the programming and figured out the math to make it all happen. My family is supported by math… my dad is an estimator for a construction company. He does math to figure out their average costs and make bids on projects and saves them from losing a lot of money which means all the employees get paid better, so peoples lives were improved by math.
Our infrastructure for our country is so… math-y. *groans at lack of proper words* Statistics aren’t just useless stuff people do to look important. They are real problems being worked through and solutions being found to solve problems we have in day to day living. We’d be late for work if we couldn’t do math. We’d have horribly fitting cabinets and appliances if nobody did math. Lives would be so much harder.
I am serious when I say this… one math problem done correctly by the right person can change our lives.
So… I hate doing the subject of math, mostly just because my dumb brain can’t comprehend it. But I love its presence in our society and I appreciate the use it has for many, many things.
The End.
