    One thought I had… in the dream/idea we use for ‘future’, we could have the dream prophesy something that’s about to happen, and then in the last paragraph have the character wake up and the dream starts all over again, except it isn’t a dream.

    For ‘past’, it’s possible we could do like… a PTSD dream. Sort of. A character reliving something terrible in their past, except dreams like that tend towards cliché because they just become a play-by-play of an event, without any of the twisted unreality of a nightmare. Writing any dream, I think, symbolism becomes key. If a character is struggling with fear of passing exams, they could dream that their professor has turned into the kraken. If a character is struggling with survivor’s guilt after coming out of a situation where everyone but them died, they could dream that they were the one holding the gun. Literal dreams are boring and unrealistic. XD
