I just had a thought; what if he chooses to stay because he’s the only chimney sweep who’s kind to the pixies? What if the other ones are hardened by their masters and tease and torture the pixies, so he feels it’s his duty to protect them? That would give him a semi-good reason to stay, and I could definitely see some 5 year olds believing that and feeling a strong sense of responsibility about it.

Another idea that could go with or without the above one, maybe someone offers schooling, is surprised when he says no, and secretly works it out so that he’s able to attend night school? That way he can move forward slowly, working hard to one day achieve a better life? But, even though he may be learning new and helpful things in school, no one’s teaching can ever compare to that of the fire pixies, who taught him to see wonder in everything, and to be kind to even the smallest creatures.

Just an idea; thoughts?
