@kate I’ve just now been doing some reading about chimney sweeps, and now I’m practically crying… did you know that they would use children as young as 4? And they would rub brine into their knees and elbows while they were standing next to a hot fire in order to harden the skin, because otherwise it would be rubbed raw while they climbed the chimney. And the chimneys were only 14 in. by 9 in.! The tortures and agonies they had to go through… they’re absolutely appalling.
