As soon as the door clicked shut, Loray was made aware of faint music that was playing somewhere off in the distance. How large was this room? Clearly it was bigger than she’d assumed, but surrounded by the darkness it was impossible to tell.
Nevertheless, Loray’s curiosity was piqued. Reaching her arms out in front of her, she began wandering towards what she hoped was the direction of the music. Many times, she halted and squinted at her surroundings. Loray hoped her eyes would eventually adjust to the shadows, but the cloud of blackness remained.
She had no clue how long she had been walking, but the music was growing in strength. Still, Loray could recognize neither the instrument nor the melody. It certainly wasn’t the traditional ”court music” Loray had grown accustomed to. However, she was aware her mentor Lady Aramay was considered a prodigy, capable of playing many different styles on many different instruments. Could she be the one playing the music? Loray certainly hoped not, for she was sure her Lady would not be too thrilled about her skipping out on lessons.
Loray was snapped out of her thoughts by the volume of the music. It was like it was right in front of her, while at the same time muffled by something. She put her hands out in front of her and felt a wall.
Pressing her ear against the wall, Loray listened. The music could be heard playing on the other side. Loray had to suppress a triumphant squeal as she eavesdropped, waiting for a clue as to the music’s source.
Loray didn’t have to wait long, as the wall she was leaning on was really a door. A fact she soon discovered when she leaned a little too much against it and went tumbling through.
