When to use that or which
Which is used when the clause can be removed and the sentence still makes sense.
e.g. Sentences, which require a noun and a verb, are what build a story.
“Which require a noun and verb” can be removed and still have a sentence that makes sense.That is used when the clause cannot be removed and have a sentence that still makes sense.
e.g. Sentences are what build a story that is proper.
“That is proper” can be removed and still have a sentence that makes sense.I hope that’s helpful! A trick I made up for remembering is:
That is extra, which means unnecessary.
