Oh! I wanted to say something else… something maybe to help us end on a more hopeful note. When we look around and see our country collapsing in on itself, with all structural support falling away while the upper portions act like nothing is wrong at all, it is indeed a bleak image.
But I’d ask you to look back at scripture… both Old and New Testament. Where do we see the falling of a nation to mean the end? Where do we see the rising of evil to mean despair? For from the darkness of Israel’s sin God showed his wonderful mercy and providence. He protected the line of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob… which would come to bring our savior. When God’s chosen fell into rebellion, he didn’t reach down and pull them out… at least not in the way man would expect. He brought something forth that hit them, and brought them back to repentance. He brought slavery and pain. But that was the cleansing work of the Lord.
Just because we are falling as a nation… a society… and a culture… doesn’t mean it requires a miracle from God to bring redemption. Sometimes it means God is letting the cleansing happen, and his redemption as yet to come. Do I think there is any stopping of our country from further falling? No.
From the midst of the Roman Empire rose up our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. From a time of darkness and slavery was born a king. Born as a man and born into a poor family. And then that king died on the cross… It indeed was bleak and painful. But through the death and pain came the Resurrection. God uses toil, corruption, and suffering to bring about glory. Why would we expect any different for our country?
It’s hard to watch the world crumble around our ears. But it’s not over. Think of childbirth. One of the most painful things in life… and yet far more glorious than most anything we can experience.
For these things we can share the hope that is within us. For we have a hope, that even in destruction Jesus is Lord. He is watching over us. He works though pain and suffering… that we might live with him. We live for light. We know that in long suffering we will be reworded.
I hope that these things help you, as they help me.
