I’d say maybe focus on the smaller, everyday parts of the character’s lives during the story. Not the boring parts, just the less… intense moments. Kind of like a conversation over a meal, maybe a bit of conflict between friends resembling school-drama, a particularly eventful car ride, or any playful escapade your characters could get into.

I definitely think it is possible to turn your story into what you’d like it to be; you might just have to look at it a little differently. If you can see the potential for a slice-of-life/adventure, you can see one very possible future of your story.
