Candle is beautifully written. If you were too revise it and submit it for the short story contest, I think you’d have a good chance at winning.

One suggestion I have is to come up with a better title for Auburna than ‘the evil woman’. She’s called that a LOT, which was distracting for me– is she the <i>only </i>evil woman in this world? ‘The Dark Lady’, or, if you wanted to be a bit less melodramatic, ‘Queen Auburna’, would work fine.
