I’m coming in a little late to this, but I’d say yes, it’s normal for them to tear up, even to cry. If he just went through an extremely disappointing circumstance that didn’t work out, like say, he worked towards something very important for a long time, and at the end, it all falls apart and is unrepairable, then it’s absolutely okay to cry. The circumstance you showed us seemed like it was an okay time to cry, otherwise he’d be a cold hearted guy, which you said he’s not anymore, as he’s softened.
