Alessio watched Nithel let the food roll back on the table, unobtrusively slipping his shirt back on. He dropped his gaze, starting to feel wretched for letting his jumpiness spread. His friend had to practically stay on pins and needles to keep him from having a meltdown. Why couldn’t he just–?
Alessio consciously halted his thoughts there. Nithel wouldn’t want him to be thinking like that. It was kindness on his part and it was ungrateful to stay stuck in his own self-pity like this. Nithel was a good friend. A…real friend.
    “It was the Adenites.”
    The words were soft.
It was just so wrong, Alessio didn’t know how to react. The last thing he wanted was the fly off the handle again but…He believes in You. What did he ever do!? What kind of God allows this…? Alessio couldn’t think of anything to say outloud. There was so much anger he’d spent so long trying not to feel, trying not to direct at anyone.
But it was still hard to believe that he wasn’t just being played by anything and anyone stronger than him.
“What sort of strategy could there be?” Nithel said, pulling Alessio back to the problem at hand. “You asked the Castle to make itself vulnerable, in some way, and it appears it agreed.”
Probably not, but it didn’t instantly murder me so that’s something…
“Though it could be a lie. If we refused to move, could it not close the walls on us? Forcing us to flee into a door. Or drop out the floor? Or fall the ceiling?”
Very probable. His mind was whirring too many things, he didn’t know how to solve this he just knew he wasn’t going to keep being herded along by this monster.
“What could be the worst thing behind each door? What have you seen before? Perhaps we could plan from that.” Alessio got hooked on the last question a little too much, whatever he had seen he certainly didn’t want to talk about. And of course, it’d be all too likely the Castle would use it against him.
What were they going to do?
    Really.
“We might plan from every worse case scenario but there’d be no way to prepare for every contingency…” Alessio said, and caught himself before he started pacing. “I think are biggest options narrow down to whether we want to try one of the doors or try to negotiate with the Castle itself.”
If he was on his own he would’ve already done something reckless but now there were other lives at stake. He really, really didn’t know how to work in a group but was trying…
“We should take a vote: who wants to move forward and who wants to pursue negotiation with the Castle?”
