@katthewriter I usually think of novellas as closer to novels, since they go up to around 40,000-50,000 words, while I think short stories tend to be less than 10,000 words? I don’t know =P I think on a scale from short story to novel, what works specifically on the novel side apply more to a novella than what works specifically on the short story side.

There’s another category which I don’t hear as much of called the novelette. The Nebula awards, for example, define a novelette as at least 7,500 words but less than 17,500. I don’t really know where it would fall.
