Have you ideas for the second and third book? Would it be better to combine all the storylines into one book?
I don’t know. I probably could combine them, and it’d definitely be cheaper to buy one cover than three, but series are sooo much more marketable than standalones. A trilogy of novellas would be much better to market than a single novel of the same length. Also, were you able to get any writing done tonight? :-}
Hmm, not sure. I don’t generally have any issues with getting things long enough…
I know! I feel like an anomaly =P The one novella I have out now was originally 10K words, and it’s taken every ounce of effort I can muster to expand it (or stretch it out, more like) to ~40K words. It’s a better story now, but it’s definitely not the kind of thing I like writing.
Have you tried plotting out all of the chapters, and adding a few more that focus on character development scenes?
Not really. I don’t know =P When I say I have a vague chronological outline I mean I know the protagonist’s backstory, the inciting incident, the climax, and the denouement, but I do not understand what comes in between or how to reveal the backstory. For the second book, I know the antagonists and the climax and denouement, but have no further idea. For the third book I know the midpoint, climax, and denouement, but no further idea. I know what the arc of the protag, love interest, and one more character will be, but that’s about it.
Also, when you edit, often your style becomes more filled out and adds more words?
My natural editing style is about taking stuff out, not adding stuff in, and according to my developmental editors I need to change that ;P It’s not a great habit to have when I never start with enough stuff to begin with.
Also, beta readers and so forth are great for helping with that.
This is where I’d put my beta readers. If I had any! (Somewhat kidding, Coggleton and especially Steward have been great help, when they’ve had the time, and Ariella and Evelyn have done great things for WYHO)
I actually just started a new draft this week! It’s the third book in a trilogy.
That’s awesome! Have you published the first two yet? What genre are the books?
