Characters who are perfect stereotypes (the evil overlord, the fearless hero, the damsel-in-distress, the bumbling henchman, etc.) never connect to readers because those people rarely if ever exist in the real world. Evil rulers have doubts and fears. Heroes mess up and do the wrong thing sometimes. Real people are very complicated, and if a character doesn’t reflect that they will be impossible to connect with.
