@gabriellepollack Well, I’m not sure if this is exactly what you meant, but here’s what I wrote:

Trent marched through the battlefield along with the rest of the soldiers in his company, heading towards the last stronghold of the enemy. Sleet drizzled over the field, mixing with the churned earth to form cold, slick mud. Trent sighed contentedly. Had he ever seen such a beautiful day as this? No, he thought, not in a long time.

Soon, the battle started. Dozens of troops dropped from enemy fire. Gun and cannon shots sounded all around. As Trent was ordered forward, he could hardly contain his enthusiasm. Even as he pulled the trigger and killed soldier after soldier, his heart fluttered with joy and excitement – for just on the other side of the enemy camp lay the city of Augsburg, his home. Where his family was waiting.

It wasn’t until Trent was hit by an enemy soldier and the company was forced to retreat that he truly saw his surroundings: hundreds of men dead and dying on a muddy field, many less than a mile from their homes. His excitement turned to revulsion, mixing with the longing to see his family to form the worst kind of agony. As he ran away from his home, Trent wept.
