Birds chirped. A cool breeze lifted Sariah’s sweaty hairs from her neck. She glanced upward, biting her lip so hard she tasted blood.

Not a cloud in the sky. Not a hint of rain. Not a sign of mourning. Not an ounce of respect from nature for those who had died today.

She could feel the whole forest smiling. Laughing. It bit her like a spear in her side. Bile stung her tongue. She fell to her knees in a flowery clearing, the buzzing of the bees blocking out reality as she screamed her fury into the soft grass.
