“It’s just a polite lie civilized people use to greet each other,” Connel said a touch impatiently “you certainly don’t strike me as a maid in need of defending.”
Þorunn regarded him disdainfully.  “Really?” she asked coldly.  “Did the sword or the spear give it away?  Or perhaps it was the mark of a shieldmaiden on my cheek?”  She turned her head slightly so that the black branching mark was clearly visible.  “I think you mistake civility for patronizing.”  With that, the young warrior turned on her heel and stormed through one of the open doors.

“You lack an imagination,” he remarked smugly “what if they just snap the food here all ready to eat just like they snapped us here all ready to cut each other’s throats out.”
“No,” Karayan said, bemused by the man snatching one of his cookies only to feed it to the dragonling, “what is lacking here is your humility.  I have seen arrogance on all scales – I’ve seen men reach for godhood – but I have never seen someone be so arrogantly contemptuous of others who are arrogant.”  The vampire munched on another cookie and shook his head.  “It always appalls me how shortsighted you humans can be,” he muttered, half to himself.
“I’m assuming with have to stick together.”
“So one would hope,” Karayan replied, standing and brushing the crumbs out of his fur, “but if so we had better follow the grouchy shieldmaiden.”
