I can definitely see what you’re saying in a lot of these things. Here’s my two cents…

    1. I am not a student of structure or plot (which I probably should be), so I can’t critically review something in this area. Also it’s been like 5 months since I’ve seenΒ The Greatest Showman, so I may be forgetting stuff. But, that being said, I don’t recall having a hard time following it (with the timeline, too). So it could be that technically speaking, it was all over the place. I was just passing time on an airplane and didn’t really see it that way… I thought it was enjoyable enough.

    2. Same as 1

    3. I think maybe in having Barnum treat his performers as trash, they might have been trying to set up some sort of character arc. I was able to more thoroughly explain that in my head a few minutes ago, but that train derailed πŸ˜›

    4. Yeah, that was stupid of him.

    5. Same as 4…

    6. I wonder if in this scene, P.T’s performers had compassion on him because they realized he was in the spot they had been in before he took them in. I’m not saying it’s realistic, but I wonder if that’s what they were trying to portray.

    7. Yeah, it was definitely a shallow relationship. But they sang a song and held hands, so it’s true love, right?! hahahaha….

All in all, I guess it comes down to what you were looking for in the movie. A true-to-life nonfiction musical portraying people as they really were and really would act; or to a show. “Where it’s covered in all the colored lights/Where the runaways are running the night/Impossible comes true, intoxicating you…”

I think that’s why people so like the Greatest Showman. It’s colorful, it’s fun, it’s impossible, and yet, for the characters, the impossible happens. Many people relate to that. They have an impossible dream, and they want it to happen. I think the Greatest Showman is relatable in that way, so people liked it.

And many people – myself included – just watched it for a show. I was entertained for my two hour flight, and that was good enough for me. I don’t think the Greatest Showman will become a classic like Sound of Music… but it’s entertaining today.

That’s all I have time for, gotta get ready for church πŸ™‚ And by the way, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is great πŸ™‚

    Have a good week!
