“No place like home,” David muttered to himself. Well it wasn’t crazy or anything like that, this place did look like Oz. Well what he could remember from the school showing. Darkness closed around him and he looked up, frightened. A familiar voice, with the sharp smack of the cane she always had with her, echoed out of the shadows.

“Why can’t you do this better? I’m ashamed to call you my son. Don’t you see what your doing to your mother? I’m going to have to discipline you now. This is all your fault.”

The voice rung in his ears. He saw a man turning and walking out the door, his own pleas whispering through his thoughts.

“Don’t leave me alone. Why did you go dad? Why didn’t you take me with you?”

“It’s your fault.”

“I’m leaving alone.”

“Can you do nothing right?”

“Don’t go to school today, that bruise would embarrass me. You should have taken better care of it.”

“I can offer you the protection of the Darkness. Allow me to introduce myself. Call me…Nemesis.”

David snapped back to attention, shaking his head as he sat down, pulling his knees to his chest. This day was getting worse. He just wanted to go home.

“Gwyneth,” Marnin called to her as she wrenched away from the other man. She came running over, tucking herself against him. “Who is this man, Finley? Is he our friend or…?”
