Yeah I guess a character could have multiple motives. I mean us humans do so the people we create can too.

Klein slowly rounded the exit of the tunnel. The room beyond opened up exponentially. A stairwell, seemingly carved out of the wall led to the floor. Columns that made sequoia trees small rose up to a ceiling far above. Whoever had made this place had meant it for awe. And it did instill awe though not in the designer’s plan. Near the foot of the stairs, one of the great columns was shattered on the ground. Others showed deep gouges and burn stains. Crawling up the ruined pillar, Klein slowly looked over.

A great grey dragon was sleeping on the floor. Curled up, it was about the size of hardened aircraft shelter. What it would be like uncurled sent shivers down Klein’s spine. It would rival a jumbo jet, might even match a space fleet corvette. Preparing to slip down the ruins, Klein stopped. Something caught his attention. A form close to the dragon stood out. It wasn’t rubble. Lowering his monocle scope, Klein zoomed in. It looked like a person but their back was to him. It might be alive or it could be another corpse.

    “Agh! Ow! That hurt now!”

Klein snapped around. A boy was wallowing on the ground.

“Okay, Right me bag is here. No! No no no, me flipping pancakes, where are they?”

Klein scampered down from his ledge. That was too loud. Way too loud.

“How ya now? Name’s Daire. Have ye lovely strangers seen my pancakes by any chance? They’re about this size.” He made a large circular shape with his hands. “Please do tell me if you’ve seen them. They’ll get cold, and I prefer them when they’re still roasting, you know what I’m saying?”

Klein quickly put his hand over the boy’s mouth, shushing at him.

“Keep it down or finding pancakes will be the least of your worries.”
