Klein had just finished recovering when the walls sank. What remained of the others appeared. Just four. More casualties to this place. Standing, Klein put Zanar down. They had to move before the next round began.
Then a man appeared. He looked like the classic image of an RPG rouge.
“And who are you?” Asked Liorah.
“Is this a joke human? I think you all know exactly who I am. Everyone and their blind and deaf mother knows who I am!”
Klein felt uneasy. The use ‘human’ suggested he was not. And if he was not, he was an alien. While his attention was focused on Liorah, Klein carefully disabled the safety on his rifle.
‘They call me the Phantom Ranger. Perhaps you’ve heard of that name?” Finished the man after a pause.
“Umm let me see. Nope! Doesn’t ring any bells unfortunately.” Replied Liorah sarcastically.
“I am the High Queen’s most esteemed assassin and spy. I have killed more people than you can count on your fingers.” The assassin was becoming angry.
“Oh. May I ask how? Let me guess. Using your death stare?!”
“Liorah!” Her brother snapped. “Don’t provoke him! Please!”
Klein was now thoroughly worried and moved to draw his rifle. Men who boasted of their kills were more dangerous than those who didn’t. Then the assassin took and inhuman lunge at Liorah. Grabbing her neck, he lifted her off the ground. In a second, Klein drew his rifle, took a knee and lit the laser sight. His target was just above the assassin’s mask, the base of the brain. An instant kill. Liorah’s flailing would make overpenetration a possible problem but Klein’s angle left only her right arm in danger.
Then the assassin said something and dropped Liorah. Dusting his hands like nothing happened, he took a nonchalant pose. Klein let the laser flash over his face for a second as a warning before switching it off. Standing, he took a guarded position with his rifle. The assassin’s move before was dangerous. While he did not seem to have any weapons, the speed of his attack alone could leave even the armor’s protection in doubt.
“Seeing as we are now acquainted with one another, and are stuck in this hellhole for who know how long, you may call me Lorcan.”
