Hmm, I really like the urban fantasy idea! It’s like the best of both worlds.

However, I see the point @ethryndal made about the contemporary pushing us toward deeper prose.

I could go either way with the genre, but if I had to cast a vote, I’d have to go with urban fantasy. The goal is to have the most original and creative prose, so if writing in fantasy/urban fantasy is easier, that could be a good thing. Also, I’m not sure how the original writing goes, but the more comfortable the writer(s) are with the genre, the better the prose will be. If more people are comfortable with fantasy, we might want to do that; if contemporary, then let’s do that. Just thoughts πŸ™‚

Totally agree withΒ @ethryndal about keeping it simple. Sometimes a story about a boy and his grandpa walking across the street can be more powerful than a war for the fate of the world, depending on how it’s written.

    So, simple might mean:
    ~Few characters
    ~Smaller setting (a park, a city block, a castle, a clearing in a forest, a sky-scraper, a restaurant)
~Lesser stakes (meaning that the world won’t blow up if the hero fails, though what’s at stake must naturally matter lots to the POV character)

I vote for 1st person POV. I agree it’d be easier to dig deep, and we can keep the focus on the character better with 1st person.

And, sorry, I haven’t done this before. I don’t know if there’s a specific way y’all do this. I’m just throwing out whatever comes to mind πŸ™‚

So one more thing we could start to think about . . . who is our character? Just a thought . . . if we want unique prose, I think we really need a unique character, especially if we go for 1st person POV. I vote for non-human. πŸ˜€ If fantasy, we could go anywhere–made-up creatures, dragons, other humanoids. If sci-fi there are droids and aliens. If contemporary there are animals and pets and pests. Makes me think of “Host” by Stephenie Meyer (not that I’m a fan of her other works, mind you πŸ˜› ).

Okay, I’m gonna quit now O:-)
