Oh! Okay, thank you! That makes a lot more sense. 🙂
I don’t believe we’ve met yet. Yes, I’m new to the guild! 🙂 It’s nice to meet you!
It sounds like you know your mystery stuff! ^_^ I personally haven’t read a lot of mystery. But all those examples you gave have me really interested to go and discover those books!
You are totally right. Character is essential to the mystery. Character creation is also one of my favorite thing in story-telling!
Here’s an idea: What about a main character with mild-to-severe amnesia? I haven’t seen amnesia in mystery novels personally (though I’m sure there are some out there), and we could definitely work it in our favor. Like, perhaps they’re super observant but forget things super easily so there’s an added sense of tension when they discover a clue–will they be able to reach someone in time to tell them what they saw? What if they forget the last important bit of evidence? Are they going to let everyone down once again?
I could actually easily see us starting the prompt in the very middle of a scene like this. Where the MC is on the verge of/is forgetting the essential part of the puzzle and is racing to write it down but alas–gets the pen and paper too late. Thus, having to retrace his steps, taking the reader along with them.
The theme/message could be “God can use you through your weaknesses”.
Although, I can easily see this idea becoming frustrating for the reader as well. Especially if they know something that the MC has now ‘forgotten’, so it might not be the best idea. Idk, what are all y’all’s thoughts? 🙂
