Well, the only intellectual stories I can think of right now are the movies Following, Memento, and The Usual Suspects. All of them use non-linear narrative to pack a punch of a plot twist at the end. They’re amazing. But they’re also have a LOT of bad language. And no moral compass. And I think the former two are rated R. I’ve only read the scripts.
So, I guess when I say “intellectual”, I mostly mean well done non-linear narrative. Stories that take some thinking to piece together as you go, but not just scrambled. Thoughtfully scrambled, with the epic reveal at the end.
I have written two screenplays. Neither one is very good, and I don’t think I even finished the second one. I need to do more world building before I can rewrite that one. The other one is a screenplay of the first version of Good or Evil. Like I said, it’s terrible.
But I think the story I’m working on now will end up being a screenplay at some point. I don’t think the story is quite long enough to fill a whole novel.
